Interview | Karen Murray, President of Nautica and Their New Store

Ladies and gentlemen- exciting news! Nautica, one of our favorite brands, has opened its first doors to a store in SOHO in New York City. Karen Murray, President of Nautica took a moment to answer a few questions about the new location and about the brand. Take a look at the cool interior design of the store and the great clothes of course.

- Who is the Nautica man and woman?
The Nautica man and woman care deeply about style and the brands that they purchase. They seek many sources for inspiration, especially those with authority such as magazines, blogs and celebrities. Style is a tool that helps them to feel respected and be appropriate. They are driven, self-confident, action-oriented people who take charge of their days, their goals and their aspirations. They have a strong affinity for the water. For them, it’s a place to connect, have fun, be social and active. In their busy lives, the water is a place to get away from the grind and be their best selves.

- Why open a store now?
Two years ago the Nautica team embarked on a brand journey worldwide in an effort to better address the needs of its target consumer and refine their brand positioning. The results enabled the brand to resonate more with the target consumer, broaden its reach, and differentiate itself from other fashion brands. The SoHo store opening embodies the brand’s refreshed marketing and design strategy that was announced in February 2016. The new positioning: Reimagine Nautica - Inspired by the Sea, Designed in the City, celebrates the Nautica brand's home in New York City and its established nautical heritage.

- What are some of the key pieces in the Spring '16 collection we should seek out?
The men's selection offers updated outerwear in new fabrications, such as high-twist poly and water repellent cotton nylon as well as new elements such as engineered pockets and inverted pleats. You will see more wovens, sweaters, sport coats and pants that have been added to the collection to help consumers build head-to-toe looks. The women’s line includes timeless pieces that are versatile. You can expect to see day-to-night staples, like chambray shift dresses, tailored trousers, and modern jumpsuits, available in a feminine mix of neutrals and sea glass shades.

- Are there plans on opening another location in the near future?
We would love to, but our focus right now is building awareness and excitement around the SoHo store.

Whether you're leaving this weekend or planning for a trip in the near future here are some key pieces I think she and I would not leave without. These will have you both looking chic and yet coordinated.

Backstage: Public Schools With Aveda

NYFW week was filled with great moments. For me it was awesome to be invited backstage by Aveda to the Public School NYC Spring/Summer 2016 fashion show. This was a very different experience from past backstage experiences. Due to the fact that this was the women's show I had no idea at the magnitud of the show. It felt like there were twice as many...everything! The show space was huge and I felt like I walked a block once inside the actual building to get to hair and makeup. The Aveda team was on point like chic little worker bees. I was told that they added male models the day before the show. Which is fair because there were female models at the men's show...just saying. Aveda's Global Artistic Director created for the show a strong rope braid. "The nomadic sensibility of the Public School Spring/Summer 2016 collection allowed for a beautiful yet resilient style. This is the girl everyone wants to be," said Ruiz. The show was a hit in every way.

Ruiz demonstrating the first steps to the rope braid.

It seriously takes a small army to get everyone ready.

There was a frenzy backstage documenting each look.

And yes, there were some male models in the show like Yuri from Re:Quest Models.

Women's Gift Guide: One Size Fits All

With the amount of ladies I have in my life this strategy has proven to be very successful. Don't buy gifts with a size- buy accessories. They can get themselves their own sweater or blouse. Get them that extra something they would normally not splurge on. I looked high and low and found these great pieces. At C.Wonder you'll find clothes but also a variety of monogramed things, like a stationary. They'll love the opportunity to write their thoughts down on personalized paper. Find unique and beautiful jewelry at Deszo by Sara Beltran like this petite shark tooth necklace. Also, you can keep her warm with an ever popular infinity scarf from Michael Stars. Does she love purses? She'll want to add this one from Rafe to her collection. For the techy girl in your life, Kate Spade has some clever covers that will surely bring a smile to her face. You're welcome.

Interview | The Duo Behind Criquet Shirts

The polo is an essential piece in every man's wardrobe which is why you should meet Billy Nachman and Hobson Brown the duo behind Criquet Shirts. They've made the American classic even better. Billy took a moment to answer some questions about Criquet Shirts and who the Criquet man is.

Did you guys work together before Criquet Shirts? How has it been working with your best friend on Criquet Shirts? Hobson and I did not work together before Criquet, but we have always been looking for a way for us to collaborate and capitalize on our skill sets. Hobson's background is in e-commerce and online marketing, while my background was in design, specifically architecture (with a family history in apparel).  We thought that Criquet presented an opportunity for the two of us to work together and grow something special. Of course working with your closest friend is amazing. Not without challenges of course, as working relationships are different than friendships, but we have done a great job of balancing the two.

Why is Austin your hub as opposed to NYC or LA? I moved to Austin back in 2007, after having lived in California and Oregon for the previous 15 years. Hobson was living in the Bay Area at the time the idea for Criquet was conceived. Having worked remotely for around a year and a half, and approximately 8 months before the official launch of Criquet, Hobson, and his expectant wife, Blake, moved to Austin. The move allowed them to be closer to both of their families, as they raised their son, and also positioned Criquet in one the fastest-growing, coolest cities in the country. Austin is a small city with a global reach.  It's an incredibly supportive town, with a great entrepreneurial spirit and a community of talented, creative thinkers. NYC and LA are obviously the epicenters for fashion and apparel/ fashion brands, but being in Austin allows Criquet to separate itself, as a Texas based lifestyle brand that appeals to a national audience.

Who is the Criquet man? He is a classically styled, forward-thinking man. He cares how he looks, yet doesn't take fashion, or his style, too seriously.  He loves the game of golf, but understands that its more about the camaraderie than the competition. He appreciates clothing that works as well at the 19th hole as it does on the 18th. He walks 36. He mixes a mean cocktail and knocks back a beer with equal gusto. He takes care of business. He gives a damn.

You started out doing men's polos and now are doing boy's polos. Do you see yourselves doing women's polos in the near future?  We launched back in November of 2010, with a women's line, The Lady Players Shirt (pics attached).  We loved the shirts, but they did not sell as well as the men's shirts, primarily because Hobson and I are far better at speaking and marketing to men (go figure).  That being said, 25% of our customers are women buying for their men, so we have every intention of bringing the Lady Players Shirt back in the fold.  It's a matter of timing at this point.

Hopefully they'll bring these polos back.

Make sure to check out Criquet Shirts' website and stay connected +Criquet Shirts on google plus, @CriquetShirts on twitter and on Facebook.

Rugged New Look Of The True Religion FW 13 Ad Campaign

One of the best parts of any given september issue is flipping through all the ad campaigns, at least it is for me. This season one of my favorites is from True Religion. The campaign stars Karmen Pedaru and Gavin Jones in these rugged desert scenes. Inspired by the film "The Getaway" it resonates with the American imagery we all come to identify with from the west. I think the new creative direction of the ad is right on point.

Savor the Last Bit of Summer

T-shirt: MeUndies | Swim Trunks: T.Christopher | Slip-ons: (similar) | Sunglasses: Michael Bastian by Randolph Engineering

Summer is almost over so make sure to take time and head to the beach or pool before it's to late. On my last trip to Miami I made sure to go to the pool and try out my new swim trunks from T.Christopher. They're a more tailored fit than board shorts made them look and feel custom-made. I partnered them with a t-shirt, slip-ons and sunglasses I was set to go around town once I was done at the pool. My trip would definitely had not been the same with out that moment in the water. How will you savor the last bit of summer?

An Inside Look: The Faherty Brand Showroom

As soon as you enter the Faherty Brand showroom and store, you’ll sense a relaxed, cool vibe that you might have once believed only an oceanside trip could provide. Lining the racks are swimsuits rich with color and patterns collected from the designers’ travels.
Women’s two-piece styles come in a variety of shapes you can mix and match, while the one-pieces have an elegant, retro feel to them. For men, swim trunks are full of practical detailing like hidden back zip pockets. One of my favorite aspects of the men’s line is its faded, sun-weathered hues.

But the best part? These swimsuits are made with recycled polyester from plastic bottles. Approximately seven bottles go into the swimsuits and 20 into the swim trunks. It’s nice to know these pieces are not only comfortable – they’re environmentally sound, too.

Meet and Greet...Jessica Skusa at SHAPE magazine

-Where are you from?
I grew up in a suburb of Houston, TX called The Woodlands. If you've ever seen the show Weeds, I can best describe it as Agrestic, but in hot and humid SE Texas. It's a planned community and all the houses, lawns, people and fashion look identical.
-Where do you work?
For the last 2 years, I've been at Shape Magazine as the Associate Market Editor.
-What and where did you study?
This is a simple question that has a complex answer. I went to a total of four schools, starting at Loyola University in New Orleans and ending at NYU with schools in Austin and San Diego in between. I graduated from NYU with a Bachelors in Journalism. I have to say, though, that I hated being a journalism major and my current profession has nothing to do the skills I learned during my years there.
-How did you get started in the fashion industry?
How did I get my start? Fate. And networking. While I might have hated my chosen major at NYU, I sort of owe the school for my initial success in the fashion industry. I saw a posting for an accessories internship at Nylon on the journalism department's online discussion board. I applied and got it. And thus began my career path to fashion editor. But had I not been in NYC at NYU as a journalism major with access to the internship postings, I would have never gotten the great start at Nylon. And a funny thing happened at Nylon. I befriended the Associate Market Editor there and we realized that she went to high school in Singapore with my friends and roommates in San Diego (small world, I know). We clicked and when she got a job at Lucky, she put in a great word for me and I was soon the fashion assistant there.
-What is your favorite trend at the moment?
Hmmm there are a lot of trends that I love right now. In general, I love the contrast of chic and edgy. Military jacket with heels. The Parisian feel of Breton stripes with cargo shorts or denim cut-offs. And because I mainly handle the accessories market, I love the mixed metals that are so hot in jewelry right now. Tough chains softened with jewels, or a touch of sparkle. And knuckle rings--I can't get enough of them!
-What is a typical day like?
My days in the office vary. Most days, I'm actually in and out of the office, going from one market appointment to the next to scope out the latest and greatest in accessories for the season. This enables me to know what pieces best fit whatever story we are currently working on, whether its a still-life page, fashion feature, or our covers. Being that its Shape magazine, I also am responsible for all on-model and celebrity fitness shoots (prepping and styling), so there are days that I'm on set at photo shoots in lieu of the office. Whatever kind of day it is, its a given that I'm always on the go.
-What inspires you?
Lots of things inspire me. The streets of New York-- seeing so many styles and personalities and walks of life. The styles and fashions of the Beatnik era also inspire me. And I don't know who in this industry isn't inspired by the J.Crew catalog lately. The styling is amazing!
-How would describe your style?
This is like the "About Me" section that's always so awkward to fill out. If I had to describe my style, I'd say I'm the girl who wants to be in a band, but isn't at all musically talented, so I figure I can just dress the part and feel just as cool. Anything striped and anything black goes. I usually mix a fairly simple t-shirt and skinny jeans outfit with a few stand-out accessories to get an edgy and slightly rocker vibe. But I'm careful not to go too literal, because let's face it, I'm no Joan Jett.

Muchas cosas me inspiran.

Meet and Greet...Lisa at Madewell

In my adventures in fashion I've meet a variety of amazingly talented and wonderful people. I think the world should meet them. Permit me to introduce you to Lisa Schulner from the women's clothing line Madewell. She took time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions. Picture by Michael Fine.

-Job Title: Stylist
-Where did you go to school? University of Maryland
-What did you study? Journalism and Fashion
-How did you start working in the fashion industry? My first job was in the fashion and beauty department at Woman's Day magazine. I was so happy to have broken into the industry since I didn't have any contacts or connections. I spent about $100 faxing my resume to every magazine in existence. It wasn't high fashion but Woman's Day turned out to be pretty great. I got to go on market appointments, shoots, and write front of book copy almost immediately.
-What does your role in Madewell entail? I style all of our photo shoots, PR lookbooks, in-house presentations...I used to also conceptualize the store windows and interiors too.
-Do you think there'll ever be a men's line at Madewell? I think Madewell would translate really well as a men's line but I haven't heard any plans for it in the future.
-What do you love about fashion? I love the story fashion tells! I feel giddy at places like the costume institute at the Met or the V & A. It's so exciting to me. It's like I'm reading an epic story of love and wealth and power and poverty and passion. And I feel the same excitement when I see people on the street who's clothing tells their story. Fashion my medium of story-telling.
-How would you describe your style? I love really intense color and exaggerated simplicity. I would transcend space and time if Maria Cornejo designed costumes for Martha Graham and I got first dibs after the show. I love anything that suggests a life spent barefoot on the beach in the warm sunlight. I love leggy vintage skirts and dresses that sit on my natural waist.
-What inspires you? Anything could hit the button. The school kids in India in all of their different uniforms...old batty ladies in the west village...all of the bleached-out vintage colors from the William Eggleston exhibit...
