Bold High-low Fashion

I saw this banded collar shirt at the Carlos Campos' studio and did not think twice about getting it. This shirt was a bit bolder than what I'm used to but I took that as a challenge to style it my way. I wore it here with a pair of my favorite chinos from the GAP and my black Givenchy lace-ups. With more and more talented men's fashion designers creating amazing pieces that can fit your everyday wardrobe easy combinations like this can be a common place occurrence. This look is a great mix of high-low fashion. When making that higher end purchase make sure you love the piece, don't just get it because it's trendy. You'll see how much easier it will be to show your style know-how when it's time to wear it out.

To the onlooker it might seem I'm going sockless, what they don't see are my Mack Weldon no-show socks.

Carlos Campos Fall/Winter 2015

I spoke about the casting process for the Carlos Campos in the previous post. Now see the finished product! The Fall/Winter 2015 collection came about from two artists inspired by each other. Artist and Art Director Rafafans created a series based on Carlos' Gaucho-inspired Fall 2014 collection. Carlos was then inspired by the image overlay and technique Rafafans used in his series. Staying true to his tailoring and minimalist DNA Carlos Campos has created another beautiful collection. Take a look at a few of my favorite looks.

Qing- wears the double breasted suit with a bomber. Take note of the cropped suit.

Toni- A huge fan of the color block and tuxedo pants.

Mac- Probably one of my favorite looks. This is a jumpsuit partnered with a neoprene gilet!

Patrick- Color block tunic with dropped rise trouser.

BTS: The Carlos Campos FW15 Presentation

Have you ever wondered how a fashion presentation is put together for New York Fashion Week? I was invited to sit in and see first hand how menswear designer Carlos Campos and his team get ready to present the Fall/Winter 2015 collection and choose the models for New York Men's Day in NYC. This is what I learned.

• In a span of 2 days the casting team sees 100 male models from all over the world.
• 13 of the top agencies in NYC send their guys including Wilhelmina, VNY, New York Models, Soul Artist.
• Models walk in one at a time, present their book and comp card. (contains sample of their work in editorials and ad campaigns).

• Models are asked to walk and try on one of the blazers or coats.
• They are looking for THE Carlos Campos Man, more often then not they know as soon as they come in to the room. Trade Secret! This particular casting director keeps three boxes in front of him to organize the model's comp cards for future reference. The boxes are not labeled but they are designated as yes, maybe, and no. The suspense, I know!

• Once the models have been seen the casting team including the designer look through the boxes and choose their final models.
• The comp cards are placed on the wall for further review throughout the casting and fitting process including alternates.

• Once the models have been selected and available they are asked to come in for a fitting.
• Fittings take about two work days. Each model needs about 30 mins per fitting.
• The fittings are to figure out which looks work best for each model and to make any alterations to the clothing as needed. Trade Secret! At Carlos Campos, they tailored every look so it will look perfect on every model.

A Second Skin

Guys, there's no need to be afraid of leather- it's always been a part of men's fashion. These days you'll find leather in new ways so you'll have more options. Here are a few new and some classic ways we can come to make leather part of a man's fall wardrobe.

Carlos Campos Spring/Summer 2015 Collection

The spring 2015 collection presents Carlos Campos' tailoring with the addition of modern sportswear.  We had a moment to chat about his collection before the presentation got underway. His inspiration came from a Spanish "public space artist" called El Tono (The Tone). Campos applied the artist's technique of overlaying geometric shapes as seen on his shirting and throughout the collection. Also, he continued working with neoprene by bringing more intricate stitching and mesh layering details to the sweatshirts and shorts. I noticed the models were very diverse and asked him about his selection process. He said he looks for guys that compliment his clothes with their personality. Below are a few of my favorite looks with notes about the collection.

New York Men's Day Designer's Inspirations

New York Fashion Week is right around the corner. Invitations are being sent, models casted, clothes fitted, so many details in preparation for the big event! Before the clothes can walk down the runway it all starts with a sketch and an inspiration. The following are some of the designers that will be showing on New York Men's day, September 3rd. Just by these sketches I can see we have a lot to look forward to.

"For Spring 2015, Original Penguin takes inspiration from the energetic and glamorous Magic City itself: late 1950’s Miami. The color palette blends chromatic reds and vibrant greens with a splash of aqua and soft pinks, providing a contrast reminiscent of the saturated colors of beachfront homes set against the soft pastel colors of Miami’s art-deco streets."

"This season I set out to imagine the cowboy of tomorrow: a modern take on the masculine icon of the Gaucho, influenced by the wonders of future fantasy, the colors of deep space, and the precision of uniform dress," says Campos.

These are just some of my favorite looks from the Carlos Campos F/W 2014 collection. The color palette is a bit darker than in the past this time working only with navy and white. What I Wore To The Project Art Benefit

On November 21st a very special event took place at 82 Mercer in the heart of SoHo. Project Paz- a non-profit whose mission is to help kids victimized by violence in Juarez, Mexico, held their 4th annual Project Art Benefit. The benefit which included a silent auction and cocktail party brought together the fashion and art community for one great cause. As a member of Project Paz I attended the festivities and it was certainly a sight to see. The art work was hung along with the decorations and everything was set. The next thing I had to think about was what would be the most proper thing to wear for such an event. Menswear designer Carlos Campos came to mind and his Fall 2013 collection (yes, my brain works that way). I decided to go with the blazer and shirt from the following look.

In order to not only look put together but also comfortable I partnered the blazer and shirt with denim. I chose my Jacob Davis denim because of the dark wash and slim fit. Overall, I kept the look rather simple but I added a bracelet from Giles and Brother and it would be a subtle touch as it peeked from the shirt cuff.

Lunch With Carlos Campos

The collection inside his studio.

It's not everyday one has a chance to meet for lunch with a menswear designer you've admired for years. When I arrived at the studio I was greeted with a hug and I knew instantly this was going to be a pleasant experience and I was right. We first started talking about how the city has changed in the last few years. You see, Carlos has been working out of the same studio for the last eight years and has seen the growth of the garment district, "The place used to be deserted years ago and now there's all these people everywhere." We didn't talk shop the whole time, family is a big part of Carlos' life and mine. Coincidentally, our families support our endeavors but somehow do not fully understand what we do in the fashion industry. Once, while in Honduras his sister was channel surfing and saw Carlos' face on the screen and after staring at it for 2 seconds and looking back at him she continued flipping channels until she found something she liked. She never mentioned that she saw him on TV! Likewise, my little sister new that I worked in magazines for years but it wasn't until one day Rihanna was playing on the radio and I told her I did a photo shoot with her that she said, "so that's what you've been doing in NYC all this time?" Our families keep us humble.

One of the things you can expect from clothes by Carlos Campos is a beautifully tailored garment. He's hands-on in the design process- he makes the patterns himself. Undoubtedly I learned in this visit that Carlos Campos is passionate about his craft.

Almorzando con unos de tus diseñadores favoritos no es algo que sucede todos los días. Cuando llegue al estudio Carlos me recibió con un abrazo y enseguida supe que esto iba ser una gran experiencia. Empezamos hablando acerca de como el área del Garment Distric ha cambiado en los últimos años. Carlos ha trabajado en el mismo estudio por ocho años, "Esta área era un desierto no había nadie, ahora hay gente en todos lados." No solo hablamos de trabajo, nuestras familias son muy importante para ambos. El me contó que estando en Honduras su hermanita estaba buscando algo que ver en la televisión y de repente aprecio la cara de Carlos en las noticias su hermana miro la pantalla por dos segundos y después a el. Ella cambio el canal como si nada! Nuestras familias nos mantienen humildes.

Una de las cosas que puedes esperar de Carlos Campos es la belleza de la hechura de sus prendas de vestir. Su proceso de diseño es de manos a la obra, él hace sus propios patrones. Sin duda en esta visita he aprendido sobre la pasión que tiene por su arte.

Year-End Thank Yous

Looking back on 2012, I'm filled with gratitude for the experiences and people I've met along the way. I'd like to make this post a thank you letter to my family, friends, to all who contributed and of course you, the reader!

A big thank you to the amazing interviewees model Akin Akman, actor Ryan Vigilant, director Vincent LaCrocq and leather goods maker Noah Marion. Thank you for taking the time to share what makes you passionate about your craft.

It was a great year for collaborations on Adentro Style with photographers and writers like Renee Rouleau, Alex Burkhuch, and Nathan Tran.

Some great adventures were had this year especially my trip to New York Fashion Week where I attended about dozen shows. Also, I was able to meet some of my favorite menswear designers like Michael Bastian, Carlos Campos and Luis Fernandez.

Another highlight of the year was the opportunity to become a men's style contributor on Rue La La's blog!

As you can see this year was filled with a lot of new types of posts like What I Wore, Favorite Four, and even gift guides. One that sticks out is my first music review for Two Lights Band.

Lastly, the most touching experiences was collecting shoes and hand delivering them to an orphanage in Mexico. Going there personally and handing out the shoes to each child was a very humbling moment I will never forget and will be forever thankful.

Por ultimo, una da las experiencias mas especiales fue de comprar zapatos y llevarlos personalmente a un orfanato en Mexico. Al ir y entregar a cada niño un par de zapatos fue algo bien lindo y nunca me olvidare.

NYFW Runway Trends S/S 2013

New York fashion week has come to a close and yet there is still more to talk about. While I attended the shows I noticed a couple of trends, these are some of my favorites. The first, is monochromatic looks. You find all green, all blue or even all neutrals on the runways. The top pictures show the models wearing these elevated monochromatic looks with different shades of blue. What man doesn't love blue? This will translate perfectly to the streets. The other trend is the short suit or a jacket and a pair of shorts. The best part about this trend is that its easy to mix and match and to dress up or keep casual. La semana de New York fashion week a llegado a su fin y sin embargo todavía hay más que discutir. Por ejemplo, me di cuenta de algunas tendencias en los desfiles y estos son algunas de mis favoritas. La primera, es monocromática; vestir solo de verde o en azul, incluso en los neutrales. Las imágenes de arriba muestran los modelos vestidos en diferentes tonalidades de azul. A que hombre no le gusta el color azul? Esto se traducirá perfectamente al diario vivir. La otra tendencia es el traje corto o en otras palabras una chaqueta y unos pantalones cortos. La mejor parte es que es fácil de hacer diferentes combinaciones y vestir de una manera mas elevada o mantenerla casual. Cuales tendencias fueron tus favoritas?

At Milk studios in the middle of New York fashion week Carlos Campos held his Spring Summer 2013 presentation. It was a carousel of colors as the young men repeatedly walked along the studio to showcase the new designs. The colors of the show were golden yellow, blue, green and white. En Milk Studios durante New York fashion week Carlos Campos sostuvo la presentación de Primavera Verano 2013. La presentación fue un carrusel de colores como los jóvenes repetidas veces caminaban por el estudio para mostrar los nuevos diseños. Los colores de la muestra eran de oro amarillo, azul, verde y blanco. El también introdujo a la colección patrones de estrellas y rayas.
